Why posting on eBay is NOT enough

You’ve probably heard of Seth Godin. He is a famous online marketer and founder of Squidoo.com.

A while ago he wrote an entry explaining why success stories on eBay are a rarity. Here is a short quote:

So, a prospect goes to eBay, types in “Elmo” and sees all the listings. Common sense tells the prospect to find the cheapest one from an acceptably rated bidder. The end result is average stuff sold to average people for slightly below average prices. The long tail kicks in and there’s a business! eBay does its share by putting a part of its profits to work in promotion and in affiliate programs and in ads on Google, etc.

You, loyal reader, can already guess what’s coming: average stuff for average people is no way to make a living. In fact, the big eBay success stories, the ones that people talk about, are the Alan Greenspan paintings, the grilled cheese sandwich that looks like the Virgin Mary, or the woman who sold the Pokemon cards for a fortune, etc. In other words, buzzable stuff. Unique stuff. Remarkable stuff. Stuff that got sold despite the search box, not because of it.

That’s all fine if you’re running a circus sideshow, but what about the hundreds of thousands of people that just want to sell typical stuff and don’t have great copywriting talent? They need a different strategy, one that gets them attention off eBay and builds an asset they can profit from.

So, unless you are famous, have great copy writing skills, or are ready to settle for a below average price you have no chance of getting out of the mass.

He proposes a solution with squidbids, we propose another with MyPadz. MyPadz delivers your products or requests directly to interested parties. Offers are sent to tens of users just waiting for what you are offering in an instant.

You don’t have to link, blog, or sacrifice a chicken to the auction gods. It’s easy.

The Future of Computers As I See it

I love technology. But I have a confession to make. I used to really hate… I mean hate passionately computers.

Why?

Because I felt they took away the benefit of intuition.

Now I remember in the 1980’s when I first saw a personal computer. One of my very good friends had an apple. When I saw the disc that old 3.5 floppy and I heard a sound coming out of the computer, I told him then and there the future of music would one day be a small computer in a car and you would pop in a 3.5 disc and listen to the music you wanted to listen to.

He started laughing because he could not picture this happening. Cars used Am/FM radios, and either cassette tapes or the venerable 8 track.

Fast forward to today and we have MP3 players.

Here is more intuition. And when this happens it will really be cool!

Right now you can go to a hotel or the library, coffee shops and other places and either plug in using WI-FI or plug your notebook in using hard wire DSL or cable.

With computers getting smaller and more powerful, many people have gone to the little computerized phones the new Apple, Blackberry, Palm Treo, etc. But the keypads are really too small to do any serious computer work.

My prediction?

I think that computers will eventually become totally modular. You will use a small portable jump drive and plug it in wherever you go. SO your data, operating system, preferences, etc. ALL go with you.

You will go to a coffee shop and there will be a keyboard, a brick (processor and RAM), and monitor you will plug in your jump drive and connect. Your data will remain private. No one will be able to come back and pick up what you did on a public computer because there will be no hard drive in the box you plug your jump drive in.

Think how fast you can get through an airport!
You keep your data on a little metal or plastic thing attached to your keyring!

You can go into a clients office, use their computer to call up data, and do what you need to.

You can do ANY type of business on the road and no worry about using public computers.

You do not have to carry as much luggage with you… no need for a notebook computer.

I hope this future comes soon! And when it does, remember… you heard it here first.

What are your concepts about the future of computing?
